The Healthiest Relationships Aren't the Ones That Never Fight

One of the biggest myths about healthy relationships is that if two people truly love each other, they shouldn't argue very much.

I don't believe that.

After years of working with couples, I've become convinced that conflict itself isn't usually what damages a relationship. It's what happens inside the conflict that matters.

Do you feel heard?

Do you feel respected?

Can you be honest without worrying that your words will be dismissed, mocked, or remembered only to be used against you during the next disagreement?

Those questions matter far more than how often a couple disagrees.

I've watched couples who argued frequently build incredibly strong marriages because they learned how to protect each other while solving problems together. I've also worked with couples who rarely argued because one or both people had stopped feeling safe enough to speak honestly.

Silence isn't always peace.

Sometimes it's self-protection.

One thing I hope you'll think about this week is whether emotional safety exists in your closest relationships. If there are conversations you've been avoiding, ask yourself why. Is it because you don't know how to begin, or because part of you isn't convinced it's emotionally safe to be fully honest?

That question often reveals more than we expect.
